(Pronounced “Dee‑wert”)

Dr. Gordon L. Diewert: A Legacy of Excellence, Service, and Compassion

Dr. Gordon L. Diewert was a gifted scholar, a devoted educator, and a passionate community builder. Though his life was tragically cut short at age 30, his influence continues to shape students, researchers, and communities more than four decades later.

Academic Career

From 1978 to 1981, Gordon served as a tenured professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Simon Fraser University (SFU). During this time, he helped establish the Institute for Human Performance — reflecting his forward‑thinking vision for integrating research, teaching, and real‑world impact in human movement and wellness.

Research Focus

His research explored motor learning, the relationship between physical fitness and psychomotor performance, and the effects of alcohol and other stimulants on reaction time. His work advanced scientific understanding and carried important implications for public safety — particularly in preventing impaired driving.

Character & Community Impact

Beyond his academic work, Gordon was deeply committed to his students, colleagues, and community. He believed in collaboration, excellence, and service — values that shaped every part of his life.

Gordon meant the world to me. His passion for the people around him—and his pursuit of excellence in all aspects of his own life and the lives of others in the communities he touched—was an inspiration to all who knew him.

— Susan Diewert Kwong

Tragic Passing

In 1981, Gordon’s life was tragically cut short when an impaired driver lost control and struck his vehicle — a heartbreaking event that underscored the very dangers his research sought to prevent.

Scholarship Legacy

In his honour, the Gordon L. Diewert Scholarship was established at SFU more than 40 years ago. It continues to support students in the Faculty of Health Sciences (formerly Kinesiology), reflecting Gordon’s belief in education as a force for good.

This enduring award ensures that his core values — intellectual curiosity, integrity, and care for others — continue to guide and inspire future leaders.

Foundation Connection

Today, the Gordon L. Diewert Foundation — a registered Canadian charity (BN: 88446 1328 RR0001) — carries forward his legacy by addressing urgent social needs with the same dedication Gordon showed in life.

Through initiatives like Cocendo, the Foundation transforms everyday commerce into dignified grocery support for post‑secondary students facing food insecurity. Gordon believed that everyone deserves dignity, opportunity, and a chance to thrive — values that continue to guide the Foundation’s work.

“Although I cannot carry on with Gord’s diverse areas of work, I can carry on some of his social and community concerns—with the same dedication and commitment that he demonstrated during his life.”
